We just love our fall events in Manhattan! Tonight we will perform for the Central Park Conservancy at a blow-out bash under a tent at Tavern on the Green. Last week we played at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the Egyptian Temple wing! Our recent weddings have been at the Plaza Hotel, The University Club, Gotham Hall, the Four Seasons and the Mandarin Oriental.
November would not be complete without our annual performance at the Waldorf=Astoria for the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Next week we have our first big gay wedding at the Pierre Hotel, which we are very much looking forward to. And the parties keep coming! It is with much love and gratitude that we thank our wonderful clients for their confidence, their vision, and for choosing Starlight Orchestras to help create their celebrated moments.
Looking ahead at our calendar, we are looking forward to a few winter performances in warm and exotic places, and some charity galas around the country. Today, though, is all about our brides and grooms for this weekend’s weddings.

The first of our fall charity balls 2011 took place this weekend in Denver.
The Starlight Experience at Children's Hospital Colorado
The Starlight Experience at Children's Hospital Colorado
Children’s Hospital Colorado hosted their 33rd annual gala dinner dance at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, and the “Starlight Experience” was flown in from New York City to entertain the 1400 guests. As always, I am thrilled, flattered and grateful to our clients for recognizing how unique and special Starlight’s musical ensembles are, from our 9 piece bands up to the 18+ piece “Experience”. Our bandleaders are involved in all aspects of operations including customer service, pre-production, customization and creative development.
The article below came out today on www.blacktie-colorado.com, and you can follow the link to a short video of the event, including a mini interview with me, Valerie Romanoff!
Like kids in a candy store, guests at the 34th annual Children’s Colorado “Caring and Curing” Gala were treated to delight after delight during an entertaining evening that raised $1.86 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Almost 1,400 in black-tie attire enjoyed the fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at Colorado Convention Center on Saturday, Sept. 10. Featuring success stories told by Children’s young patients, the event not only generated funds, but also was an engaging celebration of more than 158,000 kids treated at the hospital in the last year.
The evening began with a silent auction and cocktail hour in the Capitol Ballroom, highlighted by a pre-dinner buffet and gravity-defying aerial bartenders serving champagne while suspended from the ceiling by their feet. Guests adjourned to the massive Centennial Ballroom, where artistically elegant tables set the stage for a sumptuous sit-down dinner. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and first lady Mary Louise Lee were among the luminaries spotted in the crowd.
The brief program began with a video featuring touching personal vignettes of young patients served by Children’s Hospital Colorado. Co-chairs Carol and George Solich took the stage with daughters Brooke and Jordan, and Children’s young ambassadors presented the family with a commemorative wagon. The cause is especially relevant to the Soliches—daughter Jordan was treated at the hospital as an infant, and today is a healthy teenager. Gary Corbett presided over a live auction that garnered high-dollar amounts from generous bidders, and the Soliches announced that the 2012 Gala is planned for Saturday, Nov. 12, with co-chairs John and Bridget Grier.
Brian Regan, of Late Night with David Letterman fame, and his brother Dennis Regan had the crowd in “stitches” during separate, hilarious stand-up routines. Then, New York-based Super Bowl veterans Starlight Experience burst onstage with high-energy R&B tunes that had guests on the dance floor in no time. Founder Valerie Romanoff says the group performed at the wedding reception of Mike Shanahan’s daughter, met Children’s reps there, and were honored and excited to be part of this year’s gala. The evening ended with a dessert buffet that complemented convivial chats and camaraderie.
Founded in 1908, Children’s Hospital Colorado is a leading pediatric network entirely devoted to the health and well-being of children. We are packing our bags for another trip! Starlight takes great pride in continuing to be chosen to perform at the nation’s most illustrious events. Our clients go to great lengths in getting our whole entourage “up, up and away”- and we are so gratified that they recognize the level of entertainment Starlight always brings. While our roster of “Starlight Orchestras” may travel with personnel starting at 10 pieces; the “Starlight Experience” comes with a full complement of singers, horns, rhythm instruments and specialty performers, and is minimally 16 pieces. A performance extravaganza that delivers a vast cross-section of popular music, the performance is geared toward encouraging dancing while offering top notch entertainment.
This week’s trip is to San Antonio, Texas to participate in FIESTA, an 11-day annual festival each April coordinated by the Fiesta San Antonio Commission. With more than 100 Fiesta events produced by local nonprofit groups, the events generate funding for scholarships, grants and arts and music groups, and has evolved today into one of this nation’s premier festivals. Fiesta began in April 1891 when San Antonio women staged a Battle of Flowers in front of the Alamo to commemorate the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto.
Starlight will be taking the stage in a custom tent at the San Antonio Museum of Art, and opening for a national recording act, to be named later.
For this event, we have prepared a repertoire of fun party favorites with an emphasis on positive messages. We believe that music has the power to affect and transform, and we plan to pack a punch of POWerful, happy vibes!

After performing at this year’s Superbowl, I was so excited that I thought I would rush right home and write, post and blog about the experience. It turns out that we had a busy winter with lots of events and projects, and it isn’t until now that I can catch my breath and share a few of the details.
Starlight has performed for the Dallas Cowboys and Gerry Jones for many celebrations. This year the Cowboys hosted Superbowl XLV at their stadium, in their town, and Gerry Jones asked that the “Starlight Experience” perform for the “Owner’s Party,” which kicked off the Superbowl weekend.
And what a snowy time it was! Between delayed and canceled flights, icy conditions, roads closed due to extreme snow, we barely made it into town. But we arrived, and the Dallas Cowboys’ tour bus was at the airport to pick us up. That in itself is always part of the adventure! On show day, the bus picked us up at our hotel and brought us to the stadium parking lot. There we had to trudge with our gear a short distance through the snow to a tent where we went through the strictest security checkpoint I have ever seen! The stadium parking lot was like a tundra, and after clearing security, we boarded another bus that drove us the 1/4 mile into the stadium itself!
Once inside we were awed by the stature of the stadium, the spanking clean interior, and the majesty of the fully-lit-but-totally-empty football field. Wow! Jumbotron and all! Quite a sight.
After walking a little further, we found the stage, and met Jamie Foxx as he performed his sound check. Our turn would be next.
What a night, with 1500 guests circulating throughout the stadium and enjoying the music. We opened for Jamie Foxx, and after that Jennifer Hudson took the stage. Starlight finished the night with a mix of contemporary and old school party favs. It was quite an amazing evening! When we left the stadium hours later, we found that it had been snowing all night, and it continued until we got on the plane the next morning. Thanks, as alwasy, to the Jones family and to the Dallas Cowboys for choosing us to provide the entertainment for such amazing events. And tons of thanks to my band members for putting on such a great performance, and to my inner team for doing such a great job of getting us there.

It is with fond memories and loving wishes that we say goodbye to Jack LaLanne. Starlight had the privilege of performing for Jack LaLanne’s 90th birthday party bash a few years back. We will always remember his incredible vitality even at that age. He danced, he partied, he enjoyed being honored by his family and friends, and we loved creating the music for his celebration. His sons John and Danny sat in with our band and played “Feelin’ Alright” on tenor sax and harmonica. We remember Jack fondly and thank him for his incredible contribution to our society.

Starlight is thrilled to have been chosen to perform for the opening Superbowl party in Dallas.
Jerry Jones and family are hosting the “kick-off” event called “The Owner’s Party,” which will be at Arlington Stadium, and they have asked for “The Starlight Experience” to entertain 1000 of their guests, which includes owners of all the NFL teams. We are so excited and so grateful for this wonderful opportunity. My team and I are preparing special musical selections and designing special wardrobe for this memorable event. Thanks to the Dallas Cowboys for their long-time support of Starlight. Gotta love football!

One of my absolute favorite charity galas is the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation “A Magical Evening” at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. This event has always been full of emotion, and continues to be a deep and meaningful experience for many in the entertainment field. Film actors, Broadway actors, recording artists, health care professionals, and the many friends of the Reeve family come together to celebrate life, and continue the work started by Christopher and Dana Reeve in the cure for spinal cord injury and paralysis. The program is always heartfelt and moving. At Starlight, we always prepare a musical program that adds to the uplifting theme of the evening. We strive to present songs that will honor, encourage and inspire, while continuing to create a festive atmosphere and bring people to the dance-floor in celebration. We are always grateful to Francine LeFrak for asking us to be a part of this wonderful event, and we send our love to Alexandra, Will and Matthew Reeve, who continue to carry on the work of their parents.

DENVER POST
Starlight Orchestra pulls in $650000 for Bridge Project
By Joanne DavidsonRich and Sandy Laws chaired the Bridge Project Gala that honored Leslie and Gary Howard. (David Zalubowski, Special to The Denver Post )
The Starlight Orchestra, featuring Valerie Romanoff, seems to play all the hottest parties on the New York society circuit, and the group is establishing a name for itself in Denver, as well.
In 2008, it provided the sounds for a party at which Barack Obama celebrated his nomination for president of the United States, then Peggy and Coach Mike Shanahan engaged them to play when their daughter, Krystal, married Michael Sachs in 2009.
Their appearances were so well- received that when organizers of the 2010 Bridge Project Gala came calling, the response was an immediate “yes.”
And once word spread, reservations came pouring in.
Starlight's Performers at Bridge Project Gala
The event chaired by Rich and Sandy Laws was the most successful in Bridge Project history, raising $650,00 for the mentoring programs that the University of Denver-based Bridge Project conducts in public housing sites throughout the city.
In addition to enjoying the music, guests also paid tribute to Gary and Leslie Howard. The couple (she’s a seven-year member of the Bridge Project board) was honored for having established a scholarship endowment for Bridge Project students and for producing and hosting Miracles on Ice, which brings Bridge Kids to DU’s Ritchie Center every summer for a week of hockey, education and team building.
DU Chancellor Robert Coombe and his wife, Julanna Gilbert, were among those attending the gala emceed by KOSI personality Denise Plante. Others were chairman of the board Alec Wynne and his wife, Sherry; past chair Charles Jordy and partner Brian Fun; Mike Fries, Liberty Global’s chief executive officer, and his wife, Amber; Pam and High Noon Entertainment chief operating officer Duke Hartman; Bill Myers, COO at Starz, and his wife, Dana; and Stanton Dodge, Dish Network’s executive vice president/general counsel, and his wife, Lindsey.
Also, Clara Villarosa; Bob and Judi Newman; Matt Pluss; Jerry and Lorna Gray; Preston Ems; Evan and Evi Makovsky; Steve Brett; Gary and Terri Yourtz; Meyer and Geri Bader Saltzman; Marty and Marie Herzog; Terri and Rich Slivka; JR and Jean Bitzer; sisters Hannah and Jamie Tafoya; Ted and Sue Butterworth; Christina de Barros; and Bridge Project executive director Molly Calhoun.
Correction: The Starlight Orchestra performed for George W. Bush’s Inaugural Ball, not Barack Obama’s.
