Starlight Orchestras’ First Gay Wedding in New York City!

Tomorrow night Starlight will be providing the music for our first GAY WEDDING IN NEW YORK CITY.  Our two grooms, along with friend and event planner Susan Holland, have planned a chic and fabulous soiree at one of Manhattan’s top hotels. I have been getting phone calls from my musicians who are all so excited to be a part of our first same sex wedding.  Here’s what we are planning for music! We will start the evening with a sophisticated repertoire from the Great American Songbook, with grand piano, upright bass, tenor sax and drums. Two of our musicians will sing Michael Buble, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra favorites.  During dinner we will have a singer playing acoustic guitar doing soft rock tunes. There will be a guest performance by a friend who is a well-known celebrity. After the cake cutting, the grooms will make a short speech and invite all their friends to join them on the dance floor.  The band changes gear, we add 4 singers and start the dance party with a custom repertoire of up-tempo music.  During the evening, additional performers will come out, and there will be a few special surprises. Congratulations to our wonderful grooms and their family and friends. This will be a night to remember!

Lindsay and Andrew’s Wedding

My favorite time to write is the day after a fabulous performance, when I am basking in the afterglow of an amazing event! I am always filled with gratitude for my clients, my band-mates, and the Starlight team who help put it all together.  When you strive as we do to create the perfect blend of romance, elegance, excitement, surprise, crazy fun and variety, the result is truly something to be proud of.

Last night’s wedding of Lindsay Zweibel and Andrew Till at 583 Park Avenue was the culmination of intense and joyful planning. Every detail was considered, especially with regard to the music.

Some of my favorite moments were:

-Andrew and his parents walking down the aisle to “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts.

-Lindsay entering the ceremony framed in a vibrant white light, marching to Pachelbel’s Canon.

-Andrew’s best men (brothers Harrison and Grant Till) doing an awesome break-dance in the middle of their toast!

-Seeing many of our favorite past brides and grooms, like Elyssa and David Emden, and Rachel and Jonathan Wilf!

-The purple electric violin that our fiddle player brought to play the licks on Heartland’s “I Loved Her First” for Lindsay’s dance with her father.

-The stunning vocals we did on Boyz II Men’s “Song for Mama” for Andrew and his Mom.

-Performing an “unplugged” set during food service, which included “Layla,” “Free Falling,” and “I’m Yours.”

-Guest appearance by our own Sarah Tolar Scott, who is always such a joy to collaborate with.

-Hopping up on the drums during the dinner set to keep things moving!

-Lindsay joining us on stage in her second dress change and dancing with the band to Rhianna’s “Only Girl in the World.”

-Bringing out rock star Ryan Shaw to sing “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Sweet Child of Mine.”

-Planning all of the special touches and surprises that delighted Andrew and Lindsay and their guests.

It was an absolutely wonderful evening and I couldn’t be happier today. Thank you again to Lindsay and Andrew and your family for choosing Starlight to be part of your special day!

Elissa and David are Married!!

I am still spinning from the amazing night  at Elissa and David’s wedding at the Plaza this past Saturday. OMG Y’all! A wedding not to be believed. Details you can not imagine. Guests who really wanted to party, clients who really knew how to organize and articulate what they wanted, but also trusted the expertise of the team they assembled.  And what a team it was! Arthur Backal and I have been doing parties together for…well, for so long I can’t even say! We have always had a similar approach to flow and timing, and are very simpatico with regard to sensibility. We always go to great lengths to present the absolute best of what we are offering. When Starlight and State-of-the-Art (with Leslie Mastin and Henrik) are together, sparks fly! Add Steve Rice of the Plaza Hotel to the mix, and you have a sense of family that only years together can create. I am particularly fond of the Plaza Hotel (and Emily Reifel as well), as I started my band-leading career in that Grandest of Ballrooms, and have always been thrilled to walk through those doors. Remember, that was the scene of the Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones nuptials, and there is a favorite photo of me standing next to their wedding cake which made the cover of HELLO magazine in London.  My bride and groom from this weekend, Elissa Rome and David Emden, are stars that shine equally as bright. Together, we had so much fun planning their wedding, and we truly enjoyed the whole process leading up to their special day. Countless hours were spent discussing options, cultivating new ideas, and putting personal touches on poignant moments. Even though they were excited and recommended Starlight to all of their friends who got engaged, I knew that they really had no idea just how amazing and POWerful the music and performance would really be at their wedding. To say that it was incredible is an understatement. The night was beyond any of our expectations, and the joy and exuberance in the room was inspiring. I would love to go on and on about how fabulous the band was, but even though this IS my website, I always feel a little shy about tooting our own horn like that, so I will wait for David and Elissa and their families to post their comments and impressions below. For now, here are some elements that went into making the evening spectacular.

We worked very closely with Elissa and David to prepare the perfect music selection for the pre-ceremony and processional music. Our “Custom Ensemble” consisted of harp, 2 violins, oboe and upright bass. Since the aisle in the Terrace Room is long and the processional  begins on the upper level, we had enough time to plan for separate and unique pieces of music for each set of marchers. Consequently our processional program included the following selections:

“What A Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong)

“Maybe I’m Amazed” (Paul McCartney)

“In My Life” (The Beatles)

“The Time of My Life” (by David Cook) for the groom and his parents,

“And I Love Her” (The Beatles)

“Til There Was You” (The Beatles)

and a luscious and swirling version of “Just The Way You Look Tonight” for the bride and her parents.

The recessional music was light and uplifting with “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, after which guests entered the infamous Palm Court for the cocktail hour.

Up in the ballroom, the Starlight Orchestra opened the doors playing “Stereo Love” while guests entered and the room and filled the dance floor. Elissa and David made their grand entrance to Chris Brown’s “Forever,” and danced alone for a few moments until their families joined them for “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas.  Halfway through, the guests were all invited to join, and we  packed the dance floor again with more party favorites until it was time for a rousing hora, with family members up on chairs. After the appetizer the bride and groom had their “official” first dance to  “When You Say Nothing at All” from the film Notting Hill.

It’s funny how no two parties are ever the same. The same band, even in the same ballroom, even for the same kind of affair (this one a wedding!) are never exactly  the same.  While we prepare in advance for special music that is requested, and we map out a timeline for the evening, most of the musical choices and the ideas for maneuvering between them are made spontaneously in the moment. I have always felt that the ability to sense and know what material to play next is a divine gift, for which I am so appreciative.  Part of my “pre-performance ritual” involves a kind of meditation, where my intention is to be open to the energy of the group; and to offer the right thing, in this very  moment, for this crowd, celebrating THIS couple!

I have never shared that before in my articles, and it is a huge part of what I do and the thread that weaves through the entire Starlight organization, particularly with all of the Starlight bandleaders. Our skill and our art goes way beyond just leading a band comprised of amazing musicians and performers. In fact, having a band full of amazing people is just where it STARTS.

So on THIS night, at Elissa and David’s wedding, the POW moments just kept coming and coming. The magic between the guests, the band, and the blueprint for the evening was, as Leslie put it, “beyond the beyond.” The love in the room was palpable, with the level of energy to match!

Our repertoire included a good mix of R&B hits, 80′s arena rock (that would be ME on guitar rocking out to Guns N Roses and AC/DC, thank you very much!), and lots of Top 40.  One of my favorite moments was kicking off the after-party; Arthur dimmed the lights, the band played “Firework,” and waiters came onto the dance floor with trays of champagne bottles with lit sparklers coming out of the tops!

After that we went into “Hypnotize” by Biggie, which is one of David’s favorite songs, and two “rappers” appeared onstage. The crowd went wild! After that, we kept it totally current and played tunes by LMFAO (“Party Rock Anthem,” (FloRida) “Club Can’t Handle Me,” and on and on and on til the wee hours.

Wow! It was quite a night.  I got home at 5:00 AM, went to sleep, and believe it or not, got up ready to perform for another incredible wedding at the Hotel Pierre, which is a story for another day!

My highlight of Monday was the phone call I got from David, who spoke with me for almost an hour before giving the phone over to Elissa. We all shared something very special, as did everyone who was in attendance. That’s the beautiful thing about weddings; we all share in the LOVE that we are celebrating, and it stays with us for as long as we let it!

Sarah Scott Starlight Orchestra- Online Review NYCWeddings.Com

We were browsing online the other day and found a website called nycweddings.com

To our surprise there was a wonderful review of Sarah’s band, posted by one of our recent brides.

“STARLIGHT ORCHESTRA –
We found Starlight on a whim. We were about to book another band when we read about Starlight in NY Magazine, so we decided to make an appointment. As soon as we met our band leader, Sarah Scott, we knew we had to book Starlight. This band is absolutely incredible. They sound amazing, oftentimes better than the original artist, and can play a HUGE variety of music from Big Band/Swing, to Motown to ‘70s and ‘80s to current top 40 hits. They are great at reading the crowd and knowing what to play to get people on the dance floor. They even rocked our Hora! In addition to sounding phenomenal, the band members have so much energy and enthusiasm. They danced the entire night and even changed outfits towards the end! We went with the 12 piece band, string trio for invite and ceremony and jazz trio for CH. As a nice touch, they had the violins join the band during our first dance which included a string section. We were completely blown away by Starlight and were sooooo glad we had them at our wedding.”

Original Ceremony Music and Lots of Fun at Capitale Wedding this Weekend!

Oh how we love these wonderful letters that convey appreciation and acknowledgement from our clients.  How is it that each week is better than the next? In the words of Heather Small, yes I am proud!

The wedding was at Capitale on the lower east side of New York City. A grand yet charming venue, the polar opposite of a Manhattan hotel ballroom.  Our bride wanted something very different for her wedding ceremony, she said she wanted a whole group of acoustic guitars. She didn’t know exactly what music she wanted, so I asked if I could surprise her, and she was more than happy to leave the repertoire selection us. This was the first time I played my original music for a wedding ceremony, and it sure went beautifully. We had three acoustic guitars, flute and keyboard. The flutist played clarinet during the bride’s request of “Sunrise, Sunset” in honor of her grandfather.  For the pre-ceremony music we played some Beatles, some Alison Krause and some original jams. The music for the processional was “Prelude and Beyond” from my “Healing Music” CD.

Throughout the rest of the night we mixed up the music, mostly concentrating on uptempo and contemporary selections. Many of the guests were in their twenties, and the dance-floor was packed all night long. One of the interesting challenges about providing music for wedding receptions is how to engage all the different people at the same time. There are guests of all ages and tastes, and our goal is to have everyone up on the dance-floor  partying together. I could probably write an entire book on how we do it, what goes into the choices we make, how spontaneous and instantaneous the decisions need to be. It is about party flow, understanding and working with group energy, intuition, and using music as a tool. Either which way, the night was amazing our bride and groom and their families were thrilled.  Here are their comments on Sunday, the day after…

A Bride’s “Thank You” For Her Special Night!

Valerie,

What a night is right! You and the Starlight Orchestra were truly awesome! From the moment you serenaded John and I to our first dance, to the father & daughter dance,  to our final song of “New York, New York”-everything was incredible and amazing.

My friends are still talking about how great your orchestra was and that it made the wedding so fantastic!

The ceremony music was also excellent and so fitting for a wonderful, memorable marriage service. I had tears in my eyes walking down the aisle-I felt like I was in a movie!

Starlight is the best and I am so glad you were there for another important milestone in our lives. We will definitely send pictures and the video! Unreal!!!

Love,
“The Bride”

Alexandra

Another Dreamy Wedding At The Plaza Hotel With Starlight Orchestras

I love New York, and I love doing parties in the incredible locations that Manhattan has to offer. From the  grandeur of the stately hotels, to the striking venues that have been transformed from banks and churches, to chic and striking lofts and rooftops, New York has much to sing about. It is so special for me to perform at the Plaza Hotel, as I started my career there many years ago and have performed for countless weddings, charity galas and other parties, each one unique and breathtaking. We love adding music to  each different segment of a wedding, starting with the area where guests first arrive.  Music can and should be considered part of the design element, and is instrumental in setting the tone for the entire evening. For the wedding last Saturday night, we began playing as guests congregated in the foyer of the Terrace Room. Our harp, flute and bass delivered a medley of love songs in the style of Cole Porter and George Gershwin, until the Terrace Room doors opened.

With the addition of violins, the music for the wedding ceremony consisted of classical selections from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto and Handel’s Water Music, with the bride and her father processing to Craig Armstrong’s “PM Love Theme” from the Movie “Love Actually”.

While we opened the ballroom with Starlight’s 17 piece band playing Big Band music,  the first dance was Frank Sinatra’s arrangement of “Just The Way You Look Tonight”. Once everyone joined the bride and groom on the dance-floor , we revved it up and rocked out for the rest of the night combining Motown favorites with extremely contemporary selections from the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart.  I knew this was going to be a great party, but I must admit to being surprised at how hot this crowd got, and how much intensity they inspired in my band. Of course, it is an ongoing cycle; the band brings an energy that encourages the crowd, and then the crowd gets excited, which kicks the heat up, and then the band instinctively gives more. The crowd feels this passion and responds with increased elation. On certain magical evenings this cycle just keeps accelerating, raising the level of performance AND the party to new heights, creating an experience which, in some way, moves and transforms us all. The wedding of Alexandra Linden to John Belletti at the Plaza Hotel was one such evening.  Even the parents of the bride, Josephine and Tom Linden,  were struck by the same thing, and wrote to me…

“Valerie, I knew that Alexandra and John’s wedding was going to be special – but never, did it realize the heights you were going bring the evening to – it was FABULOUS – like going to a concert in the garden.  You are such a special friend to the Lindens – and such a talent.  Our guests so enjoyed the evening – and when they talk about it – the first thing they mention is the orchestra.  John and Alexandra tell me that the first person they saw after being actually married was you serenading them on your guitar – a moment they will never forget

Thank you, thank you and thank you

Now we need to get together one night and cook together – it would be a blast!

Josephine”

and from the Director of Catering at the Plaza.

“You guys were awesome.

Really amazing and the Lindens were thrilled.

Steve.”

and from me…

“Dear Josephine and Tom,

Wow, what a night! Thank you for your most wonderful notes.  I too was blown away by the energy in the room last Saturday night! I think we all impressed ourselves!  Thank you again for all the confidence you have had in me throughout the years. I recognize that it is your confidence, trust and vision that gives me the forum to present my brand of music and entertainment.  I know that there are extra needs and budget we have in order to present this unusual ensemble, and I thank you for giving us the tools needed to make it happen!

As always, it is a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of your family’s happiest times and celebrations.

Much love to the Lindens (and now the Bellettis ) from the Starlight family!

Love, Valerie”

Tsion and Elyse’s Wedding at the Waldorf=Astoria with the Starlight Orchestra

There is nothing like a New York wedding! The Manhattan skyline, the eclectic architecture, and the energy that permeates every detail makes getting married in this town a unique experience.  I have performed and provided music for weddings all over the country, and there is something undefinable about being here in New York City.  Add to that the thrill of being in one of the grandest hotels. The Waldorf, The Plaza, The Pierre; all rich in history, home to countless magnificent weddings and galas over the decades.  I am privileged to have been a part of so many wonderful events at these venues, as well as the newer trendier spots which have cropped up in recent years.

Being chosen to perform at Tsion and Elyse Ben-Susan’s wedding at the Waldorf a few weeks ago was an even bigger honor because both families have strong connections to the music business.  We always appreciate being recognized and sought after when “industry insiders” want to impress their guests at the caliber that they are known for.  Among other connections, The Ben-Susan’s own B.B. King’s Blues Club, The Bluenote and the Highline Ballroom.  This promised to be an evening of music, magic and Mazel and we were happy to “host” the collection of bands and talented musicians that shared the stage with us.  Starlight outfitted the grand ballroom with an amazing sound system,  and played as the “house band” while friends from Israel performed the Hora, relatives from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic did a Salsa set, and a fabulous DJ featured modern European music.  At the ceremony, 18 violins plus piano, guitar and bass accompanied the infamous Cantor Dudu Fisher.  For the cocktail hour, our jazz trio delivered from the Cole Porter piano in the Park Avenue Lobby, and played an entire repertoire of “Rat Pack” favorites, as per the groom.  Once in the grand ballroom, the 600 guests danced to the varied music of the Starlight Orchestra. Tsion had asked us to play a lot of funk classics, and Elyse wanted Top 40 and hip hop hits, so we weaved together an eclectic program of seamlessly mixed music.

It was a fabulously successful evening, the bride and groom were “over the moon” as they danced and celebrated the entire evening out on the dance-floor. We were invited to perform at B.B. King’s Blues Club (which we hope you will all come to!) and the evening is scheduled for Thursday March 24th, 2011.

Congratulations to Tsion, Elyse, and the whole Ben-Susan Family! And thanks to Brett Matthews for the photos!

Broadway Ceremony Song Selections: Starlight Orchestra At A Hotel Pierre Wedding Last Night

Last night we performed for a wedding at one of my favorite venues, the Hotel Pierre. What a fantastic night it was. When I walked in several hours before the wedding was to start, the family and bridal party were having photos taken in the Cotillion Room. I could tell by the upbeat atmosphere in the room, by the big smiles and hearty hugs that this  was going to be a really great night! And so it was!! The string ensemble and I did a run-through of the ceremony selections while the family was posing for their photos. Everyone got excited when they heard the Broadway numbers that the bride and groom had chosen.  We had a harp, 2 violins, cello and bass, and with this ensemble we performed the following selections for the processional:

“Tradition” from Fiddler on The Roof for the Rabbi and 2 sets of grandparents;

“One Boy” from Bye Bye Birdie for the Best Man,

Then, the Groom and his parents walked in to “Luck Be A Lady” from Guys and Dolls.

“Seasons of Love” from Rent for the 8 sets of Bridesmaids and Ushers;

“Popular” was played for the Maid of Honor;

“Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” for the 2 little Flower Girls

Finally, and dramatically, the bride and her parents walked down the aisle to “Memory” from Cats.

At the end, after breaking the glass, everyone recessed to “You’re The One That I Want,” from Grease.

Aftr the cocktail hour, we opened the ballroom with very upbeat dance music. When the Bride and Groom did their grand entracne, they asked us to play  Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.!”

They came onto the dance floor and did their dance to the David Cook version of “Always Be My Baby.”

For cake cutting, they dedicated the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” to the Father of the Bride.

Throughout the evening, the Starlight Orchestra performed a variety of contemporary and classic dance music, concentrating on Top 40 (lots of Black Eyed Peas, Rhianna, Lady Gaga!) classic rock (Def Leppard, anyone?) to classic favorites by Abba and Madonna.

The guests had a wild and crazy night, and at this one, so did the band!

I just have to end the way I so often do, and thank my band-mates as well as the team at Starlight for their contribution to making this event as wonderful as it could be.  It takes an enormous effort to present in the maner that we do; to prepare all of the special music, learn all of the intricate parts and make it sound realistic, fresh and exciting, and then add the sparkle that makes it all seem magical!  I used a phrase in a recent article, where I alluded to the “invisible artistry” that goes into band-leading “Starlight style.”  I will leave that as an open ended mysterious statement, and one day I will write about that concept. For now, suffice to say that the result is something truly incomparable, and we are all very proud!
